Update: Suspect fatally shot, ending Salem standoff

A Salem police dog was wounded Friday during a shootout near a Walmart between officers and a wanted man.

Officers responded after 11 a.m. to the store's parking lot in the 1900 block of Turner Road Southeast to investigate reports of a suspicious vehicle and encountered a man determined to have an active warrant for his arrest, said Salem police Lt. Dave Okada during a press conference.

The man fled to an RV in the lot and shot at the responding officers, who returned fire, Okada said. The police dog, Baco, was the only officer hit. The canine was taken to an animal hospital and later released.

The suspected shooter locked himself inside the RV and police are attempting to try and convince him to surrender, Okada said. The man's condition is unknown.

Police have the store and surrounding area on lockdown as they try negotiating with the armed man, according to Okada. People are advised to avoid the area for the next few hours.
