Property owners concerned with extent of logging near Apex Ski Resort

NEAR PENTICTON – The property owner’s association at the Apex Ski Resort west of Penticton wants less logging activity in the area.

They say the proliferation of cut-blocks is a visual blight, could reduce their property values and might limit the area’s recreational development potential.

“This is an intensive recreation area. If we want to cut more trails to encourage more people to come up here for mountain biking and cross country skiing, well you don’t hike in a clear cut, you hike in a forest,” says association spokesperson Jeff Brown.

Her says most of the logging is being done by Weyerhaeuser, adding the company has been very communicative with the association.

“They’re fully meeting and actually exceeding the regulations so from their perspective, it’s business as usual.”

Weyerhaeuser’s Public Affairs manager says the company tries to mitigate the property owner’s concerns as much as practical when laying out cut-blocks.

But Wayne Roznowsky says there are no plans to reduce the harvest as the timber is needed to supply their mills
