One Direction, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay have been announced as performers for the first ever BBC Music Awards.

Radio 1 Breakfast host Nick Grimshaw joined Radio 2's Chris Evans in his studio this morning to reveal the news live on air.

DJ Calvin Harris and "Can't Rely On You" singer Paloma Faith have also signed up to play at the ceremony at London's Earls Court on 11 December.

"Every year is a marvellous year for music in the UK and 2014 has been no exception," Evans said. "The inaugural BBC Music Awards will be the new icing on an ever-mouthwatering end-of-term cake.

"We shall gratefully be tipping our hats to those whose lights have shone brightest and whose music has helped water the inner flowers of our souls, hearts and minds over the last 12 months."

Hosted by Evans and Fearne Cotton, the BBC Music Awards will be broadcast live on BBC One and rival ITV's popular Brit Awards.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is "really looking forward" to the show. " It's an incredible line-up and we're honoured to be part of it," he said.

Winners for awards such as British Artist of the Year and International Artist of the Year will be decided by a panel of industry experts while Song of the Year will be chosen by a public vote.
