While rising demand for smartphones and tablets drives much of the Chinese electronic components industry, American technology leader Integrated Silicon Solution (ISSI) delivers one-of-a-kind integrated circuits focusing on the automotive, industrial and communications markets in Asia.

"We work with our large sales team in China to achieve worldwide support for our global and China customers," says Scott Howarth, president and CEO. "It's a matter of building global sales and support teams upfront to support the transfer of business and the technical requirements our customers expect."

ISSI's well-positioned foothold in China includes an office network across Hong Kong, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dalian, Chengdu, Chongqing, Suzhou, Xiamen and Shanghai, where it acquired a new US$9-million building. The company acquired companies in Xiamen and Taiwan in the past, and is looking towards similar opportunities through joint ventures with several Chinese companies.

Since entering the automotive market in 1999, ISSI has built a broad portfolio of high-speed semiconductor memory with lifecycles that outlast most integrated circuits. "Automotive memory has unique quality requirements such as the ability to withstand high temperatures and last for years with no defects," Howarth says.

ISSI is the only manufacturer of dynamic random-access memory (RAM) capable of meeting thermal requirements reaching 115 degrees Celsius. It launched its high-density eight-gigabyte double data rate type three memory or DDR3, and is keen on venturing into NAND flash technology to expand its support for flash memory across its customer base.

Apart from the automotive industry, which accounts for almost 50 per cent of its annual revenue, ISSI supports the industrial, medical, military and aeronautics sectors. It has a complete portfolio of static RAM, dynamic RAM, NOR flash and analogue products for various applications.

"We ask ourselves if we're heading in the right direction over the next three to five years - not just the next quarter - and cautiously invest where we see the largest potential for sustainable growth is in the future," Howarth says.
