American utility Southern Company's largest subsidiary, Georgia Power, has launched a residential solar service.
The company is offering customers a number of tools to assess the potential for solar on their home and offering its own installation service. Those who decide to install can arrange for a third-party installation however and are not tied to using Georgia Power’s own team.

“Georgia has one of the fastest growing and most competitive solar markets in the country,” said Norrie McKenzie, vice president of renewable development, Georgia Power. “Our new solar offering further delivers on our commitment to provide the energy choices our customers want and the world class service they expect.”
The company runs a solar buyback scheme with a premium rate of US$0.17/kWh.
In March this year the state passed legislation to permit third-party leasing of solar equipment.
Georgia Power has also ramped up procurement of utility-scale solar.
