Women’s World Cup 2015: Google doodle celebrates Sunday’s final

This article is more than 8 years old

Google has marked the Women’s World Cup final with a new Google Doodle on the search engine’s homepage.

The doodle is arranged in the blue, red, orange and green of the Canada 2015 logo and depicts female players and fans experiencing the highs of the tournament.

One picture shows two players, possibly on opposing sides, embracing; two others show goal celebrations; another shows three fans regaled with a scarf, flag and vuvuzela respectively. Foremost sits an image of a football sitting inside a trophy – an analogue of the World Cup trophy itself – framed by a large red maple leaf.

The final, which will take place in Vancouver and kicks off at midnight UK time, pits USA against Japan in a rematch of the 2011 final. On that occasion, Japan won on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw.

Google has a history of producing sports-related doodles, among them a series of Olympic-themed logos that were produced to coincide with London 2012 and, in 2013, a doodle celebrating the start of the 100th Tour de France.
