Kentucky-Bound Bolo Works Sharp 5F For Derby

Santa Anita Derby third-place finisher Bolo worked five furlongs in 59.60 on Santa Anita’s fast main track on an overcast Friday morning under Rafael Bejarano, who will ride the son of Temple City in the Kentucky Derby a week from Saturday, May 2.

Trainer Carla Gaines said the Kentucky-bred colt owned by Golden Pegasus Racing Inc. and Earle I. Mack worked “perfectly” and will leave Sunday for the Blue Grass State.

Also departing Sunday will be unbeaten Santa Anita Derby winner Dortmund for Bob Baffert. Dortmund is scheduled to breeze at Santa Anita tomorrow, as is Sunland Derby winner Firing Line for Simon Callaghan.

Trainer Jim Cassidy said Delta Jackpot winner Ocho Ocho Ocho, third in the Blue Grass Stakes, left today for Kentucky and will breeze at Churchill Downs on Wednesday. Elvis Trujillo rides the son of Street Sense in the 141st Run for the Roses.

Three-time Derby winner Kent Desormeaux will ride Risen Star third-place finisher Keen Ice for Dale Romans in quest of victory No. 4.

FINISH LINES: Shared Belief is back at his Golden Gate Fields base after suffering an injury to his right hip in the Charles Town Classic last Saturday and could be sidelined 60 to 90 days, Dan Ward, assistant to Jerry Hollendorfer, said Friday. The Santa Anita Handicap winner will ultimately move from Golden Gate to the Pegasus Training and Equine Rehabilitation Center in Seattle for further recovery . . . Edwin Maldonado, Corey Nakatani and Drayden Van Dyke have stakes engagements at Golden Gate Fields Sunday . . . Sam’s Sister, winner of the Grade I La Brea Stakes last Dec. 26 and the Grade II Santa Monica Stakes on Jan. 19, worked five furlongs for Hollendorfer in 59.80 under Rafael Bejarano . . .
