KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are making a big donation to help kids in the metro area. The team announced Tuesday that The Children’s Place will benefit from next year’s Chiefs charity game.

Children who have survived abuse, neglect and trauma are getting a boost from this effort.

Young kids, who have endured traumatic events like abuse, surviving a fire or illness, even watching their parents go through a bitter divorce, receive therapy and treatment from The Children’s Place. The group helps kids regain a healthy childhood.

There are 52 children in the day treatment program and another 200 receive services as outpatients every year. The Children’s Place helps youngsters overcome developmental delays and works with parents to change patterns of behavior, allowing families to heal from serious events. The Chiefs have a history of supporting this agency, and now are making a commitment to help the non-profit expand services.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us,” said Ann Thomas, vice president of program administration for The Children’s Place. “We have looked at lots of different ways we can use this money, but one of our biggest opportunities is to look at our building, our facility, whether we can expand our size or bring it more up to date. I think that is the direction we will head with these dollars.”

The Children’s Place expects to receive between $350,000 and $400,000 from next year’s Chiefs’ charity game, which is the top philanthropic game in the National Football League. Players like Dustin Colquitt and Thomas Gafford spent time on the playground with kids in the day treatment program. The team wants to be part of the community by helping The Children’s Place reach more families that need support.

“Since 1978 this facility and this staff, this organization, has really been focused on the children, the youngest victims of abuse and neglect and other trauma,” said Chiefs’ President Mark Donovan. “It’s a blessing we have in our community. We are very happy to support it.”

The team says in the past 10 years more than $5 million has been donated to local charities through the Chiefs’ charity game. The Children’s Place says trauma does not discriminate and the need in our community continues to be great.
