A former investor relations consultant who ran barefoot from court after being charged with trading on advance peeks obtained from company press releases was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison by a judge who rebuked him for failing to accept the responsibility for his crimes.

Michael Lucarelli, 52, a former consultant for investor relations firm Lippert/Heilshorn & Associates Inc., blasted his former employer in a tearful speech in federal court in Manhattan Wednesday, claiming his bosses withheld commissions and failed to pay for his medical insurance. Lucarelli said he committed insider trading to help pay for his treatments for Crohn’s disease and his retirement.
