Hotel’s environmental efforts win praise

An independently owned and operated hotel that has gone to great lengths to improve its environmental performance has won the New Zealand hotel sector’s highest environmental accolade.

Auckland’s Jet Park Airport Hotel and Conference Centre has won the Qualmark Environmental Initiative Award 2013, it was announced at the New Zealand Hotel Industry Conference dinner at the Pullman Auckland last night.

Jet Park Airport Hotel has reviewed every aspect of its business to see where improvements can be made to its environmental performance. Changes have ranged from small initiatives such as installing eco-bulbs and recycling paper, through to larger projects like setting up a solar panel farm which now heats the water for half the hotel.

The hotel attained a Qualmark Enviro Gold rating in 2011.

Jet Park Airport Hotel and Conference Centre is also committed to being socially responsible. It supports Women’s Refuge through the donation of curtains and other household items, is a major sponsor of SPCA Auckland, and works closely with educational and government agencies to provide employment opportunities for local residents.

“This independently-owned property punches well above its weight for environmental awareness. It has demonstrably gone above and beyond the norm in this area,” says Awards judge and and co-host, Stephen Hamilton, Director of Horwath HTL.

Other winners named in the New Zealand Hotel Industry Awards were:

Lane Neave Lawyers Senior Hotel Executive 201

Simon White, General Manager, Rydges Wellington

ServiceIQ Hotel Industry Outstanding Young Hotel Executive 201

Shane Michael, Concierge Manager, James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor, Wellington
