Luna Smart Mattress Is Your Lazy Dream Come True

Climbing into a cold bed at night is just as unpleasant as finding an empty coffeepot in the morning. Luna hopes to change all that with its smart mattress cover.

Luna adjusts your bed's temperatures, tracks your sleep patterns, and connects to home devices. But don't expect to hit your local Bed, Bath and Beyond to pick one up: The covering is still one quarter of the way from its Indiegogo crowdfunding goal of $100,000. As of press time, the project—which launched today—had earned more than $73,800.

If Luna reaches its target, the team will move into the final design and engineering stage next month, with plans for the mattress pad to go into production in March. Early adopters can expect their 100 percent polyester, Wi-Fi-enabled smart cover to arrive in August.

"We created Luna as a response to a glaring omission from the rapidly advancing smart home," Luna CEO Matteo Franceschetti said in a statement. "Everything around us is getting smarter, except our bed."

Unlike most mattress covers, which bunch in the corners and offer no assistance with the morning coffee, Luna integrates with IFTTT and home automation systems. Which means it can trigger actions like turning on the coffee maker once awake, or activating a smart door lock when in bed.

It also comes with a handful of sensors—sleep phase, biometrics, ambient temperature, and light—as well as a microphone. Plus, it's machine washable, and the 90-watt power supply promises a low-voltage system that won't electrocute you during the night.

But a sleep-tracking mattress pad doesn't come cheap: At the current 30 percent discount, the full- and queen-size versions cost $179, while King bed owners will need to shell out $189. If you miss the early-bird crowdfunding prices, pre-orders can be placed for $199 and $219, respectively. Tack on $50 for international shipping.

Personalized temperatures, advanced sleep tracking, an alarm, and smart home integration not enough for you? For $319, you can get early access to the Luna mobile SDK, as well as one mattress pad.

"Since the beginning, we've been set on building Luna to integrate seamlessly into your life," Franceschetti said. "As something you don't have to activate, but that's always there with you to promote a healthier, more productive lifestyle."

The real luxury lovers may even want to drop a whopping $3,900 to have Luna delivered by drone—limited to the San Francisco area only. Or spend $4,900 on a custom-edition cover, which can be printed with your own design.
