Riverbed SteelApp Improves Performance, Stability, and Security of think project!'s Cloud-based Collaboration Solution

Riverbed (News - Alert) Technology (NASDAQ:RVBD), the leader in application performance infrastructure, today announced that think project! is using Riverbed® SteelApp™ Traffic Manager to improve the scalability, stability, reliability, and security of its software-as-a-service (SaaS (News - Alert)) collaboration platform. After outgrowing an open-source load balancer, think project! moved to SteelApp Traffic Manager. The next-generation virtual application delivery controller (ADC (News - Alert)) offers more than just load balancing, including built-in security and authentication services, a TrafficScript scripting and configuration language, and compatibility with analytical tools such as Google (News - Alert) Analytics.

Based in Munich, think project! offers a cloud-based SaaS solution for structural and civil engineering organizations, as well as industrial and plant construction companies. The company's cross-enterprise collaboration platform is available in 21 languages and used by more than 100,000 people working on 8,000 projects in 40 countries. Their customers include Audi, BMW, Munich Airport, and Lufthansa Technik.

In 2000, when think project! established its platform on its own server infrastructure in a data center, the company relied on an open-source solution for load balancing. As the company grew, and as the number of projects and users expanded, so did its infrastructure and load balancing requirements. The open-source solution was no longer adequate for load balancing, nor was it able to meet high security standards. In addition, the company wanted a scalable solution that could keep pace with its growth.

"In the end, it was very easy for us to choose Riverbed SteelApp out of the four products we reviewed," said Jochen Maurer, head of product management at think project!. "We tested various ADC solutions in practice, and Riverbed won us over both in terms of technical aspects and price."

Integration and implementation of SteelApp was fast and seamless with the most important tasks completed in a day and the entire replacement of the old configuration within a week. "The changeover from the old to the new infrastructure and 400 virtual servers going live went smoothly from start to finish" said Maurer. "We were able to go live without any problems and did not experience any failures. SteelApp offers us the greatest amount of stability and has worked perfectly so far."

While Riverbed SteelApp Traffic Manager is a top virtual ADC on the market, it provides more than mere load balancing. "We were pleasantly surprised to see that Riverbed offers more than a conventional load balancing solution," added Maurer. "Without having to adapt our own software, SteelApp enables us to use analytical tools like Google Analytics. We are also able to offer our customers greater convenience. For example, during maintenance work, they can receive an automated text as soon as the platform is up and running again. I am also still amazed at how unbelievably fast and easy it is to learn TrafficScript."

Security is another element of SteelApp that Maurer and his team welcome. "Our security has increased. For example, too many attempts to enter an incorrect password are seen as an attack and make Captcha verification necessary," said Maurer. "Furthermore, many attack vectors are already filtered by the ADC and are not passed on to the application."

"Our customers appreciate the better performance as well as the additional service we can offer with SteelApp," concluded Maurer. "Many services that were not possible in the past can now be provided. When compared to other solutions, Riverbed was the clear choice for us and we haven't been disappointed."

Riverbed SteelApp

Riverbed SteelApp is a virtual ADC for scalable, secure, and elastic delivery of enterprise, cloud, and e-commerce applications. The SteelApp product family provides control of traffic to and from applications, enabling fast, reliable, and secure application delivery to users anywhere from the cloud or data center. It is a complete software-based Layer 7 ADC with integrated web content optimization (WCO) and web application firewall that enables companies to deliver optimized and secure application delivery services where and when they are needed in an elastic manner.

Riverbed's unique approach automates the deployment, licensing, and metering of application delivery services, making possible an "ADC per application" delivery model in which isolated resources and costs for ADC-as-a-Service can be allocated to each client application. This unique approach reduces costs and time to production while enabling rapid change and scale for data center applications.
