Software security company Symantec is eliminating 175 jobs at its big customer service center in Springfield, The Eugene Register-Guard newspaper reported Wednesday. The work is going to facilities in other parts of the country and overseas.

The facility opened in 1993 and had 1,300 full-time employees last year, plus another 200 part-timers, according to the Register-Guard. The newspaper said Symantec is the largest technology employer in Lane County.

Symantec is in the process of splitting in two, retaining its software security business and spinning off its Veritas information management business into a separate, publicly traded company.

"Both companies will continue doing business in Springfield; however, we have decided to exit Veritas Customer Support from the Springfield site," Symantec spokesman Noah Edwardsen said in a written statement. "This action affects 175 Veritas customer support positions, some of which will be relocated to Veritas sites in Minnesota, Florida and India."

Symantec did not specify whether the layoffs were part-time or full-time positions.

The national and regional tech economies are thriving - Oregon tech employment is at its highest point since 2002 and growing by more than 2 percent annually.

Yet some companies continue making cuts as they reposition their businesses. Silicon Forest employers that have announced layoffs this spring include Mentor Graphics, Lattice Semiconductor and Vancouver telecommunications company Integra.
