Friday Sector Laggards: Energy, Financial

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Friday, shares of Energy companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 0.2% loss. Within that group, Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. (NYSE: DO) and Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. (NYSE: COG) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 2.7% and 1.9%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (AMEX: XLE), which is up 0.2% on the day, and up 1.69% year-to-date. Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc., meanwhile, is down 18.95% year-to-date, and Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. is up 4.73% year-to-date. Combined, DO and COG make up approximately 2.0% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Financial sector, showing a 0.1% loss. Among large Financial stocks, Principal Financial Group, Inc. (NYSE: PFG) and Ameriprise Financial Inc (NYSE: AMP) are the most notable, showing a loss of 3.8% and 2.3%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Financial stocks is the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF), which is flat on the day in midday trading, and down 1.57% on a year-to-date basis. Principal Financial Group, Inc., meanwhile, is down 3.10% year-to-date, and Ameriprise Financial Inc, is down 6.99% year-to-date. Combined, PFG and AMP make up approximately 1.2% of the underlying holdings of XLF.
