Louis Dreyfus Commodities BV named Mayo Schmidt chief executive officer as the world’s largest rice and raw-cotton trader considers going public or selling a stake to remain competitive.

Schmidt will replace interim CEO Claude Pierre Ehlinger on Jan. 5, the Rotterdam-based company said in a statement today. He’s a former president and CEO of Viterra Inc., a Regina, Canada-based grain-handling company that was acquired by Glencore Plc in 2012. Schmidt spent 12 years at Viterra and worked five years at U.S. packaged-food company ConAgra Foods Inc., according to the statement.
