Syngenta AG, the world’s largest agro-chemical maker will cut or relocate 1,800 jobs in 2015 to bring down cost, a step that will “increase the footprint” in its Pune centre.

Syngenta’s current global employee strength is 28,000. Of this, around 1,400 are in India. The job cuts are a part of the savings programme announced in February, under which the company is aiming to save USD 256 million in 2015 and USD 1 billion by 2018, a company statement said.

“The actions being implemented from yesterday will result in job reductions and relocations totalling around 1,800 across the company, the majority of which will occur in 2015,” the Switzerland-based company said.

On the the impact of the move on India, Syngenta India said in a separate statement: “We would like to say that we do not report on an individual country/territory basis but there are changes across all pillars.

“The programme will increase our footprint in Pune at the Global Delivery Centre established in 2013,” it added. “By optimising our cost structure within the framework of the integrated strategy, we will attain industry-leading efficiency. This will allow us to bring distinctive offers to growers more quickly and ensure a sustained improvement in profitability,” Mack said Syngenta has manufacturing and research sites in Switzerland, the UK, US, China and India.
