Marathon to help makeover Detroit Police’s 4th Precinct

The Detroit Police Department’s Fourth Precinct is ready for a makeover.

Between noon and 4 p.m. Friday at the site on West Fort, the Detroit Public Safety Foundation is working with precinct Capt. Michael Chambers, as well as about 25 volunteers from Marathon Petroleum Co.’s Michigan Refining Division on a host of efforts, police said in a statement.

Those efforts include landscaping, a revamping of the “Fallen Officer” cabinet and fresh coats of paint for the community, CompStat and report rooms, officials said.

Marathon Petroleum Co. also is donating more than $3,000 to the foundation “on behalf of their employees’ commitment to public safety,” the statement read.

The foundation, which was incorporated as a tax-exempt organization in 2003, seeks funding from private sources to support police and fire initiatives, according to its website.

“Every aspect of our operations at the Detroit refinery focus on safety — not just of our employees and contractors, but also our neighbors in the community,” said Dave Roland, the company’s general manager, in a statement.

“For almost two years we have been providing funding for a directed police patrol in the Detroit neighborhood closest to our refinery, and we have also supported DPD’s Fourth Precinct in other events, like the National Night Out and its Community Fun Day Picnic. So this opportunity to continue contributing to our city’s law enforcement officers is a natural fit for us. We’re honored to help Detroit’s superheroes.”
