EAST RUTHERFORD -- San Diego resident Vicki Golden got her first dirt bike at age 7. Now, she's about to make history.
She's attempting to become the first woman to qualify for a main event in supercross - a motorcycle racing sport that takes place on an artificially-made hilly dirt track.
It's all going down at a world championship event taking place this Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at (a freshly dirt-filled) MetLife Stadium, part of the 2015 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season.
Paterson-born rider Justin Barcia, who now lives in Florida, thinks that seeing the sport live - including riders' up to 30-feet-high and 70-feet-long jumps - is how fans are made.
Nicknamed "Bam Bam" for his fearless riding style, Barcia said fear is relative. "I'd be scared going to work at a desk," he quipped.
On Saturday, practice and qualifying starts at 9 a.m., but the main racing event will start at 3 p.m. - and, for the first time ever, it will be televised live on FOX.
Supercross also came to MetLife Stadium last year after a 20-year hiatus from the N.J./N.Y. metro area, according to Feld Motor Sports Communications Director Denny Hartwig. Supercross being in the northeast for the second year in a row reflects "strong growth" in interest, he said.
