Anglo Leasing led to Banana loss in 2005

The Anglo Leasing scandal negatively affected the referendum campaign for a proposed constitution in 2005, a court was told on Wednesday.

Former Internal Security minister Christopher Murungaru while being cross examined on a case in which he has sued former Governance Permanent Secretary John Githongo for defamation, told court that Anglo Leasing information in the public domain negatively affected Banana side.

GOVERNMENT DOWNFALL

“I went public on many occasions letting the country know that many of the accusation against members of the government were part of a wider scheme for the downfall of the government,” said Dr Murungaru.

He also told court that his denial of a visa to travel to the US and UK was also part of the scheme.

“It was in the public domain that principal leaders in the administration were targeted for vilification and there was an intention on foreign forces using local players to cause disaffection against the government with a view of causing regime changes,” said Dr Murungaru.

He claimed the UK and US released information on why he had been denied a Visa only after had challenged the decision.

The hearing continues.
