NCR heat index to peak at feverish 41.1°C this Tuesday

Metro Manila is in for a feverish heat index of up to 41.1°C on Tuesday, although most other major cities will still have to bear with a heat index in the mid- to high-30s.

State weather agency PAGASA's heat index projections for Tuesday also noted near-40-degree temperature in the Visayas and high-30s in Mindanao.

The heat index, sometimes referred to as the "init factor," indicates the apparent temperature or what the air "feels like." It is based on actual air temperature and humidity.

A heat index of 41.1°C is comparable to a feverish person's body temperature.

Other locations

For Tuesday, PAGASA said Tuguegarao City may feel a heat index of 38.9°C.

However, Iloilo and Bacolod may have a heat index of 39.6°C. Metro Cebu may have a heat index of 39.0°C while Tacloban may have a heat index of 37.1°C.

Zamboanga City may have a heat index of 37.8°C for Tuesday.

For Wednesday, Metro Manila is still expected to feel the heat with a heat index of 40°C, and Tuguegarao at 39.2°C.

On Wednesday, Iloilo and Bacolod may feel temperatures of up to 38.6°C, while Metro Cebu's heat index Wednesday is forecast at 38.7°C.

In Mindanao, Zamboanga City may have a heat index of 38.0°C Wednesday while Metro Davao may have a heat index of 36.3°C.

Heat index warnings

Earlier, PAGASA said that between a heat index of 32 and 41°C, "fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and activity" while "continuing activity could result (in) heat cramps."

PAGASA's tips to cope with the heat index include:

1. Stay indoors as much as possible.
2. Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.
3. Drink plenty of water regularly. Avoid drinking liquor because it dehydrates the body.
4. Eat small meals but eat more often. Avoid eating foods of high in protein which can increase metabolic heat.
