Powell River residents fight plan to log urban forest

WATCH: Imagine the uproar if a company announced plans to log in Stanley Park. That’s the battle Sunshine Coast residents say they’re fighting right now — to protect “their” urban forest. Kylie Stanton reports.

People in Powell River are fighting Island Timberlands’ plan to clear cut Lot 450, a massive urban forest within the city limits.

Former Liberal MLA Judi Tyabji says instead of protecting the wilderness corridor that stretches from the ocean almost uniterrupted into the mountains, the city is looking to sell off portions of it for development.

But because Island Timberlands has the logging rights to the trees, it needs to deal with them before any investors consider moving forward.

In an effort to ease tensions, the city has signed an agreement with Island Timberlands to protect 90 acres. But another 200 acres still remain slated for clear-cut.

In that area, up to 20 active nests have been identified, making the Wildlife Act the primary line of defence.

“We know there’s nesting birds in there right now,” said resident Jenny Garden. “We know where they are. They’re on the map. They’re pointed out. Island Timberlands is breaking the law.”

Island Timberlands did not return a request from Global News for comment. It’s work in the area is expected to be finished within the next four months.

Protesters likely won’t be letting up soon.

“I’m going to move in over there,” said Tyabji, pointing to a forested area. “For the first time in my life, I’m going to willfully break the law because these trees belong where they are. This is the heart of Powell River and it’s very precious.”
