Residents in several parts of the city woke up to a pleasant surprise after many areas received heavy showers early on Wednesday morning.

With the temperatures soaring over the last few days and summer setting in, the early morning showers were seen as a welcome relief.

The average temperature in the city has been 38 degree Celsius during the last few days and the scorching sun has left people reeling under the sweltering heat.

While areas such as K.K. Nagar, Anna Nagar, Gomathipuram, Melamadai and Simakkal received showers for half an hour, areas on the outskirts of the city were said to have recorded steady rainfall for more than 45 minutes. Post the showers, however, the day turned out to be extremely hot with temperatures soaring in the afternoon. A few parts of the city received mild showers after 7 p.m. but the climate remained warm.

Many residents said that they welcomed the summer showers and hoped that it would continue so that the situation with regard to the availability of groundwater improves. Households in K.K. Nagar, Gomathipuram, Narayanapuram and Pudur have already begun to deepen bore wells since the groundwater level has gone down.

The Meteorological Department has predicted mild showers for the district during the next few days and but has also predicted that the temperatures would remain high between 35 degree Celsius to 37 degree Celsius.
