HBO Go now available on Xbox One (update)

HBO Go's Xbox One app is finally rolling out today in the U.S., Microsoft and HBO announced.

Microsoft apparently jumped the gun on the news earlier this week, when a tile on the Xbox 360 dashboard and a video on the Xbox YouTube channel both claimed that the Xbox One app had been released. The company eventually removed the dashboard advertisement and the video. That followed a leak last month of purported images from an early version of the Xbox One app.

HBO Go on Xbox One requires authentication with login information from an HBO subscriber. The Xbox One app supports the following pay-TV providers at launch: AT&T, Bend Broadband, Blue Ridge Communications, Cablevision, Charter, Comcast's Xfinity, Cox, DirecTV, Dish, Grande Communications, HTC Digital Cable, Massillon Cable/Clear Picture, Mediacom, Midcontinent Communications, RCN, Suddenlink, Time Warner Cable and Verizon FiOS. HBO announced last month that it plans to begin offering a streaming service that isn't tied to a pay-TV subscription next year.

The Xbox One app supports Kinect voice and gesture control, just like the Xbox 360 app. As you can see in the screenshot above, the Xbox One interface resembles that of the PlayStation 3 app, which was released in March. HBO Go provides on-demand access to original HBO TV shows like True Detective and Entourage, movies such as Argo and Moonrise Kingdom, sports programming including Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, stand-up specials from comedians like Louis C.K. and Wanda Sykes, and more.

"Xbox is one of our subscribers' favorite ways to access HBO Go and its incredible breadth of award-winning programming," said Jeff Dallesandro, vice president of digital domestic network distribution at HBO, in a prepared statement. HBO Go has been available on Xbox 360 since March 2012.

The release of the Xbox One app fulfills a promise Microsoft made more than a year ago, weeks prior to the launch of the console, when the company said HBO Go was "coming soon" to the system. At the time, Microsoft listed HBO Go as part of the Xbox One's "first wave" of entertainment apps, all of which were scheduled to be released by spring 2014. Then, in June, Microsoft announced that HBO Go would instead be available by the end of the year.

HBO Go is still scheduled to be released on PlayStation 4 this year.

Update: The HBO Go app is now available for download on Xbox One.
