The stand-off between an ebola nurse and the authorities in the US state of Maine took a turn to the farcical today as Kaci Hickox ventured out on her bike despite instructions to stay quarantined indoors.

State police trailed slowly behind Ms Hickox in a police cruiser as she and her boyfriend Ted Wilbur pedalled along country roads in morning sunshine.

Norman Siegel, Ms Hickox’s lawyer, insisted that there was no legal reason preventing Ms Hickox from venturing out. He pointed out that she had avoided the town centre so as not to “freak people out”.

“Since there’s no court order, she can be out in public,” said Mr Siegel.
