My Little Pony Hasbro Films 2017 Banner Animated

Looks like JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS is not going to be the only throwback to 1980s animation to be hitting the big screen. Hasbro Films and Allspark Pictures will work together to bring the animated film to theaters in 2017 from writer Joe Ballarini and producer Megan McCarthy.

MY LITTLE PONY has had something of a resurgence in recent years after the 2010 series, "Friendship is Magic". An entire subculture has grown around the series, including a group of adult men who call themselves "Bronies". Like the original run of the cartoon, MY LITTLE PONY has already spawned numerous direct to DVD movies.

My background in MY LITTLE PONY is limited to visits to my see my nieces and there seems to be a very complex fantasy mythology in the new series, one that could easily spawn a feature film. The question is, like any franchise, is the film being designed to capitalize on existing fans or to establish a new base to pull in new ones.

Hasbro seems to be looking at ways to develop their smaller, less direct franchises like TRANSFORMERS, and finance them on their own. This would be the most cost effective solution and likely means we should be seeing a lot more toys-turned-films in the near future. With the goal being for MY LITTLE PONY to hit theaters in just about three years, stay tuned for more.
