Prep roundup: MHSAA announces 2015-16 classifications

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced classifications (A, B, C, D) for the 2015-16 school year on Monday, with enrollment breaks for postseason tournaments set up by divisions posted to each sport's page on the MHSAA website.

For 2015-16, there are 750 tournament-qualified member schools with 187 schools in both Class A and Class B, and 188 schools in both Class C and Class D. Schools with 875 or more students are Class A; schools with 420-874 are Class B; Class C is 213-419; and Class D are schools with enrollments of 212 or fewer.

The new classification breaks will see 13 schools move up, while 17 will move down in 2015-16. Among those moving down are Delton Kellogg, which will go from Class B to Class C.

The classifications for the upcoming school year are based on the second semester count date of Feb. 11. The complete classification listing can be found at mhsaa.com.

GIRLS' SOCCER

Lakeview 2, (at) Harper Creek 1: Lakeview's Ava Cook netted two goals in the non-conference win. Allega Baird scored Harper Creek's goal on an assist from Mari Baird. In goal for the Beavers (1-2), Kelly Klutts made 15 saves.

Pennfield 10, (at) Maple Valley 0: Scoring for Pennfield were Kayler Beech (two goals), Naomi Davis (two goals), Montana Rench, Lexi Westermen, Emily Biergeder, Lark Rahn, Shaylee Smith and Lexi Thurston. Rench added two assists, with one apiece coming from Beech, Westermen and Jaylyn Shepard. In goal for Pennfield (2-0), Mekenzie Lamb earned the shutout. Mple Valley's Elysia Piedrola made 16 saves in goal.

Coldwater 4, Sturgis 0: Megan Hoath had two goals in the win for Coldwater. Also for the Cardinals (2-1), Allison Germann and Mackenzie McGuire each scored, with assists coming from Madison Marsh, Jasmine Wellet and Breanna Eddy. In goal for Coldwater, Shelby Bowers made five saves.

(At) Vicksburg 2, Coldwater 1 (Sat.): Madison Marsh had a goal with an assist from Megan Hoath in the loss for Coldwater. In net for the Cardinals (1-1), Shelby Bowers made seven saves.

Lakewood 3, Olivet 0: Megan Ormsbee made 10 saves in goal in the loss for Olivet (0-3-0).

BASEBALL

(At) Lakeview 18-7, Marshall 3-1: Jake Herbers got the win for Lakeview in four innings work with five strikeouts. At the plate for the Spartans, Nick Jones had three hits with a triple; Hunter Bost had three hits with a double and Nate Jones had a double and a triple. For Marshall, Drew DeVine and Mason Griffith had a double apiece. In Game 2, Lakeview's Bost got the win over five innings with six strikeouts. Offensively for the Spartans (2-1), Nick Jones had three hits including a double.

(At) Harper Creek 6-7, Hastings 1-1: Aaron Elliott picked up the Game 1 win for Harper Creek with five strikeouts. At the plate for the Beavers, Joe Ramos had a home run and three RBIs and Elliott helped his cause with a double and an RBI. In Game 2 for Harper Creek, Noah Hayes picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits. Offensively for the Beavers (2-0), Joe Stasa had two doubles and three RBIs; Dawson Bartlett had two hits and two runs scored; and Hayes helped his cause with a home run.

(At) Coldwater 10-15, Union City 0-0: In Game 1, Coldwater's Nick Shaw picked up the win in two innings relief, allowing one hit with five strikeouts. At the plate for the Cardinals, Randall Linton, Michael Gillette, and Brendan Spangler had two hits apiece. In Game 2, Coldwater's Sean Printke got the win in relief with three strikeouts over one inning work. Offensively for the Cardinals (2-0), Gillette had two hits, Spangler had a single and a triple, Brandon Lewis had two hits including a triple; and Jordan Butler had a three-run home run.

Homer 10-4, Bronson 0-2: In the six-inning Game 1, Brock Ridgeway picked up the victory for Homer, allowing one hit over six innings with four strikeouts. At the plate for the Trojans, Nate Sitkiewicz had two hits with a double, a triple and three RBIs; Ridgeway had two hits; Garrett Warner had two hits and an RBI; and Gary Thompkins had a hit with two RBIs. In Game 2, Nick Hollenbaugh earned the complete-game win for Homer in five innings with three strikeouts. Offensively for the Trojans (2-0), Thompkins, Tyler George, Will Balentine had an RBI single apiece. For Bronson, Coty Bennett had a double and a run scored.

SOFTBALL

(At) St. Philip 18-21, B.C. Central 1-2: In Game 1 for St. Philip, Kara Twiest tripled and singled. In Game 2 for the Tigers, Twiest had four hits while Emily Forche, Stephanie Chmiel, Abby Mullis and Julianna Unger had two hits apiece.

Marshall 10-0, (at) Lakeview 8-3: In Game 1 for Marshall, Brooklyn Patton had two hits, Kara Hulce had two hits and two RBIs; Kaylie Bates and Hope Earl each tripled with an RBI apiece. For Lakeview, Kim Kaharczyk went 3-for-4 with four RBIs; while Shayna Staring, Shelby Sanchez, Meredith Johnson and Kerynna Dean had two hits apiece. In Game 2, the Spartans' Staring got the win in the circle with three strikeouts over five innings. At the plate for Lakeview (1-2), Sanchez had one hit and two RBIs.

(At) Harper Creek 12-16, Hastings 2-10: In Game 1 for Harper Creek, Haleigh Pickett earned the victory in the circle with nine strikeouts over five innings. At the plate, Anna Pascoe was 2-for-3 with three RBIs; Katie Wade was 3-for-3 with twoRBIs; Kalie Graham was 2-for-4 and Aubrey Greenfield was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. In Game 2 for the Beavers, Pickett earned the win with four strikeouts. At the plate for Harper Creek, Pascoe had four hits and three RBIs; Jaliee Keller and Sam Tilleyeach had two hits and an RBI and Greenfield had three hits and three RBIs.

(At) Bronson 5-11, Homer 3-1: In Game 1 for Bronson, SkylerSobeski picked up the complete-game win. At the plate for the Vikings, Sobeski was 3-for-4 with with a solo home run while Payton Robinson was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. In Game 2, Sobeski got the win for Bronson with two strikeouts over two innings. Offensively, Hannah Hoover was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs; KinsleaBlouin was 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI; Robinson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and AdysonLasky was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

BOYS' LACROSSE

(At) Vicksburg 14, Pennfield 9: Carter Needham scored four goals in the road loss for Pennfield. Also for the Panthers, Justin Lamb had two goals, Michael Davis had two goals and Ryan Miller had one goal.
