Spirit Airlines is hosting a flight attendant job fair in Detroit on July 8 as it looks to expand its fleet and routes.

The airline said it plans to hire 500 new flight attendants this year, and will host other hiring events in Chicago on July 13 and Minneapolis on July 15,

You must be at least 21, have a high school diploma or GED and stand at least five feet tall without shoes. You also have to be able to work flexible hours and holidays, have a valid passport and be able to lift 40 pounds from floor to shoulder level.

Job-seekers need to apply at www.spirit.com/careers. The airline will notify those it might want to hire and interview.

Last week, the Miramar, Fla.-based airline announced it was going to build a 126,000-square-foot maintenance hanger at Detroit Metro Airport, which will bring 80 new jobs.

Detroit is one of Spirit's flight attendant bases, along with Atlantic City, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Ft. Lauderdale, Las Vegas and Chicago.

"We're adding 15 new aircraft to our fleet this year and we need more great flight attendants to fly with us," said Laurie Villa, Spirit's vice president and chief human resources officer in a written statement.

The airline is known for its low fares and for its add-on fees, including carry-on luggage charges.
