The recently created spinoff of PPL Corp. announced Friday that it would be selling a group of small solar, wind, biogas and cogeneration projects that previously comprised PPL Renewable Energy to funds managed by California-based Energy Power Partners.

The 25 projects to be sold include the 3.2-megawatt Wind Project at Turkey Point, which is located at the Frey Farm Landfill near Conestoga. The two 262-foot-tall wind turbines fulfill 20-25 percent of Turkey Hill Dairy’s energy needs.

The sale also includes four Central Pennsylvania gas-to-energy facilities: a 3.2-megawatt system at the Frey Farm landfill, a 6.4-megawatt system at the Cumberland County landfill, a 3.2-megawatt system at the Greater Lebanon Refuse Authority landfill, and a 6.4-megawatt system at Blue Ridge landfill near Chambersburg.

Talen will be meeting with the landfill owners and seek their approval of the transaction, Lewis said.

Talen Renewable Energy includes 65 megawatts of Talen’s about 15,000-megawatt capacity, he said. After PPL transferred ownership of its electric generating capacity to the newly created company, it no longer made sense for the company to retain this renewable portfolio.

“They’re generally smaller projects, often with sales directly to one customer, and that didn’t fit with Talen Energy’s business model moving forward,” he said. “We will certainly include renewable energy projects, but on a larger scale.”

The sale is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and it is subject to unspecified regulatory approvals.
