Wednesday Sector Laggards: Energy, Healthcare

The worst performing sector as of midday Wednesday is the Energy sector, showing a 2.0% loss. Within the sector, Chesapeake Energy Corp. (NYSE: CHK) and Transocean Ltd. (NYSE: RIG) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 5.6% and 4.1%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (AMEX: XLE), which is down 1.5% on the day, and down 5.19% year-to-date. Chesapeake Energy Corp., meanwhile, is down 45.25% year-to-date, and Transocean Ltd., is down 14.84% year-to-date. Combined, CHK and RIG make up approximately 0.9% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Healthcare sector, showing a 0.3% loss. Among large Healthcare stocks, Baxter International Inc. (NYSE: BAX) and Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASD: GILD) are the most notable, showing a loss of 44.6% and 1.2%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Healthcare stocks is the Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV), which is up 0.7% in midday trading, and up 10.19% on a year-to-date basis. Baxter International Inc., meanwhile, is down 45.74% year-to-date, and Gilead Sciences, Inc. is up 23.13% year-to-date. Combined, BAX and GILD make up approximately 6.9% of the underlying holdings of XLV.
