A rogue egg thief was caught by police in Bulgaria after a raid uncovered detailed diaries and photographs of his crimes hidden behind artwork in his flat.

Jan Frederick Ross, formerly of Bury, Greater Manchester, moved to Bulgaria around 2004 after three convictions for stealing eggs in the UK. He was discovered in his flat with a number of eggs from endangered species.

Investigators discovered climbing equipment used to access cliff and treetop nesting sites. They also found photographs and detailed diaries hidden behind artwork hung on the walls of Ross’s lounge. The diaries held records of more than 1,000 eggs from a number of rare birds, including the imperial eagle.
