Hannaford Supermarkets and Whole Foods Market are recalling certain lots of products containing walnuts because they may contain salmonella bacteria, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, according to the United States Food and Drug Administration.

The recall comes less than a week after Trader Joe’s recalled walnut products from its shelves.

On Friday, Aurora Products Inc. of Orange, Connecticut, issued a nationwide voluntary recall of products sold under several brands by supermarkets throughout North America, including Hannaford and Whole Foods. In all, more than 30 nut products were recalled. The full list is available here.

The presence of salmonella was discovered in one container of walnuts during routine testing by an outside company contracted by the FDA. No illnesses have been reported.

In a separate recall, Trader Joe’s last Tuesday recalled five varieties of raw walnuts sold under its house brand because of potential salmonella contamination. A list of those products is available here.

Hannaford Supermarkets on Saturday issued a news release that is recalling the nut mixes, Nature’s Place Roasted Unsalted Mixed Nuts and Nature’s Place Cranberry Mix. The products sold at Hannaford come in 9-ounce and 9.5-ounce packages. The item numbers included in the recall are 725439 94507 and 725439 94 563.

Customers are advised to discard the products and present a sales slip to any Hannaford store for a full refund.
