Business heads eye expansions in Qatar


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) H E Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, the Minister of Economy and Commerce, met with corporate captains of major international companies on the sidelines of World Economic Forum in Davos.

Many of them expressed their desire to further expand their operations in Qatar, the Ministry said here yesterday.

Richard Haythornthwaite, Chairman of the Board MasterCard Inc, Nils S Andersen, Group CEO, The Maersk Group, Benoît Potier, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Liquide and Jean-Pascal Tricoire, President and Chief Executive Officer of Schneider Electric and Joe Kaeser, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens and Ken Allen, CEO of DHL were among other top corporate chiefs who held discussions with Sheikh Ahmed.

In a separate meeting, the high-level Qatari delegation, which comprises, apart from Sheikh Ahmed, H E Ali Shareef Al Emadi, the Minister of Finance, Qatar Central Bank Governor

H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Saoud Al Thani and Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohamed bin Saud Al Thani, Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Investment Authority, reviewed with Executive Chairman of the WEF Klaus Schwab, the challenges facing the global and Arab economies.

In his meeting with Sheikh Ahmed, MasterCard Chairman Richard Haythornthwaite hailed Qatar for the sustainable economic development the country has been witnessing for the past several years.

He expressed MasterCard's interests in Qatar to further expand its operations in Qatar.

The Maersk Group CEO Nils S Andersen exchanged his views on various issues in the energy sector and Maersk's exposure in Qatar.

Benoit of Air Liquide expressed his desire to deepen his company's investments. The Siemens CEO discussed the company's operations and expressed his desire to expand its business in Qatar.

Qatar's high-level delegation participating in the World Economic Forum has reviewed the great positive steps taken by Qatar in the areas of entrepreneurship establishment and competitiveness improvement before a number of participants in the Forum's 45th session.

The World Economic Forum Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab praised the importance of the strategic partnership with Qatar and the role played by the country in the global economy and international cooperation. It also hailed the country's judicious management of macroeconomic policies.

The Qatari delegation also met with US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker to discuss ways of mutual cooperation, trade facilitation and promotion of relations between the two countries.

The Minister of Economy and Commerce met with Saudi Minister of Commerce and Industry Dr Tawfiq Al Fawzan Al Rabiah in Davos and discussed bilateral relations in trade, economic and investment and ways to develop them in the light of the growing relations between the two countries.
