RR Donnelley halts work at TN plant
CHENNAI: RR Donnelley Publishing India, the Indian publishing arm of global printing and packaging giant RR Donnelley, has suspended production at its Sriperumbudur plant due to lack of orders. The company exclusively supplied printing and packaging products to Nokia.
“RR Donnelley has discontinued its operations at the Irungattukottai plant and none of the operators and workmen are reporting to work over the past few days.
The company has also floated a voluntary separation scheme and sent the proposals to the employees’ residence,” sources said.
RR Donnelley officials did not wish to talk on the topic. The company employs more than 300 operators and nearly 60 other staff.
The factory has been tottering ever since Nokia downed its shutters in India. Besides, competition from domestic print companies from Sivakasi (in southern Tamil Nadu, which is renowned for its printing business) dimmed RR Donnelley’s prospects to seek business outside Nokia.
“Roughly, the payout will be around Rs 4 lakh for operators,” sources said.
