A community-based program that helps young people get an education received a boost from the federal government today.

Minister of State for Seniors Alice Wong announced $24 million worth of funding for Pathway to Education Canada. The announcement was made while they officially launched their Vancouver program.

Several corporate sponsors also announced their support, including Shaw Communications, the parent company of Global News.

“We are thrilled that the Government of Canada is demonstrating such a strong, continued commitment to Canadian youth. Their generous investment will be extremely valuable as Pathways continues to expand across Canada,” said Samuel L. Duboc, the Chair of Pathways to Education Canada.

Pathways is in 17 communities across Canada, with over 1,350 volunteers serving as mentors and community liaisons. The government says that high-school graduation rates has doubled among program participants since it began.

“We need pathways. In our low-income communities, 50 per cent plus of the kids are dropping out of high school. And when you drop out of high school, you get on a track that typically leads nowhere good,” said Duboc.
