The stock market indices had a very strong day today, and the markets closed at the highs for the day going away with a very big session. The day started out with a pop up. They pulled back midmorning, and then moved up in the FOMC announcement, which had no major affect on the market anyway. The market did have a little volatility at that point, and then they bounced and kept going higher. At the end of the day they consolidated in the last half hour and ended the day on a positive note.

Net on the day, the Dow was up 158.75 at 16,533.06. The S&P 500 was up 15.20 at 1888.03. The Nasdaq 100 was up 35.31 at 3635.61.

Advance-declines were nearly 2 to 1 positive on the New York Stock Exchange, and 3 to 2 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was just under 3 to 1 positive on New York, with total volume of 575 million shares. Nasdaq traded over 1.6 billion shares and had a more that 3 to 1 positive volume ratio.

TheTechTrader.com was mixed but mostly higher. Priceline.com Incorporated (PCLN) was up 27.16 to 1177.44, Google Inc. (GOOG) up 9.17 to 538.94, Apple Inc. (AAPL) up 1.60 to 606.31, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) 3.82 to 305.01, Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) 18.93 to 390.60, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) 1.50 to 186.39, and Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS) 3.00 to 159.35.

Tesla Motors, Inc. (TSLA) jumped 4.15 to 199.45, and Vipshop Holdings Limited (VIPS) snapped back 3.76 to 172.90.

Facebook, Inc. (FB) ran 1.93 to 60.49.

The solar stocks were very strong today. SolarCity Corporation (SCTY) was up 1.24 to 49.32, First Solar, Inc. (FSLR) up 1.76 to 60.39, SunEdison, Inc. (SUNE) 98 cents to 18.55, and Trina Solar Limited (TSL), on strong earnings, 3.20 to 13.56. Canadian Solar Inc. (CSIQ) rose 1.59 to 24.00 even.

Checking the TheTechTrader.com percent-gain leaderboard, low-priced India Globalization Capital, Inc. (IGC) popped 78 cents to 2.03, or 60%, on 20 million shares. China Ming Yang Wind Power Group Limited (MY) bounced 97 cents to 3.63, or 36 1/2%, on 8.3 million shares. Orion Energy Systems, Inc (OESX) thrust 67 cents to 4.87, or 16%.

NewLead Holdings Limited (NEWL) exploded today, ran up to 4.79, before backing down to 4.40, up 1.09, or 33%, on 36 million shares.

Qiwi (QIWI), on earnings, ran 7.21 to 42.12, or 21%, on 2.2 million shares. EZCORP, Inc. (EZPW) thrust 1.99 to 12.45, or 19%, on 1.3 million shares.

Other stocks of note included Chimerix, Inc. (CMRX) up 1.98 to 16.20, Lorillard, Inc. (LO) up 5.90 to 62.63, on a potential takeover by Reynolds, JinkoSolar Holding Co.(JKS) up 2.33 to 24.70, Tiffany & Co. (TIF), on earnings, 8.07 to 96.30, Tronox Limited (TROX) 1.85 to 26.13, The Greenbrier Companies, Inc. (GBX) 3.65 to 54.26, Autohome Inc. (ATHM) 2.33 to 36.41, Trulia, Inc. (TRLA) 2.21 to 35.97, and Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (MXWL), one of our favorites, 1.02 to 16.64.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were up sharply in the morning, settled back a little bit midday, backed and filled into the FOMC meeting, and then had a very strong close.
