Children are being murdered, mutilated and recruited by gangs in Mexico’s brutal drug war in sharply escalating numbers, with at least 2,000 killed in the past eight years.

Infants have been murdered in their car seats, shot in the head and dumped in fields or even killed in the arms of their grandparents. In one case in 2011, gunmen killed a woman and three of her grown-up children in her home, then shot her 22-month-old granddaughter at close range. In another incident, gunmen chased a man into his home near the US border, shot him dead and then shot his six-month old son in the head.
