Valspar And Enchroma Color For The Color Blind Video

Watch This Incredible Video Of Color Blind People Seeing Color For The First Time

In a new short documentary from Valspar Paints and Enchroma, a group of colorblind individuals are given the opportunity to view the full spectrum of color — an experience most of us take for granted every day.

Color blindness affects a large amount of population, predominately men. Roughly 7 to 10% of men are red-green colorblind.

Enchroma is an R&D group that has created a pair of glasses capable of enhancing color vision in the color blind.

In the video, the color blind individuals get to put on the glasses and view a rainbow-colored art installation, an orange and purple sunset, paint swatches of various shades — a father even gets to see his son's drawings in full color for the first time.

If you're not color-blind, the only way to fathom this experience would be to imagine someone showing you a new color that you'd never seen before. Imagine someone just came up to you and said, "this is jurple," and showed you a completely new color that somehow existed outside of the rainbow. It would be a sort of mind-blowing experience.

In the video, one of the color blind individuals, an older man, looks up at the rainbow art installation in awe, with mouth agape and lets out a sound that's something between a sigh and a gasp. It's a moment that seems to pretty well sum up what seeing color for the first time must be like.

A narration over top of the video says "In the end, the experience of color is so private that you don't really know how to explain [it]." This is another very strange and true aspect of color. It would be very difficult, almost impossible, to explain different colors to someone who has never seen them. Most of the adjectives we might use to explain a color — for example, we might call green "fresh" or "lush" — actually come from our knowledge of things that are that color rather than the color itself.

The video really highlights how incredible and mysterious a part of our life color is and how beautiful a gift it is for someone to get to experience it for the first time.
