Montclair Public Library Introduces RFID Checkout Technology

The E-ZPass-like technology will make for quicker checkout and help the library keep better track of inventory.

The Montclair Public Library will become the first library in the state of New Jersey to fully utilize radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, library officials said.

RFID technology, used in the electronic toll-collection system E-ZPass, is a combination of radio-frequency based technology and microchip technology, and will provide the library with better tracking, more security and an easier method of loaning and returning library materials, Montclair Public Library said.

RFID gives the library complete inventory control, enabling library staff to easily search for returned items, rather than a manual self-check. Additionally, RFID will simplify check-out and check-in of all material for library patrons. The technology allows those borrowing library materials to check out multiple items “in a single motion” and the ability to self-return, the library said.
