Vigilant CCTV operators at the Hawthorns football ground, close to where the accident happened, reported it to the ambulance service and paramedics who were already in attendance for the game between West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace were first on the scene.

Paramedic area support officer Huw Jones live-tweeted the incident as it happened from his account @WMASHuwJones.

Mr Jones said: "West Bromwich Albion CCTV officers first noticed the incident after it happened and ground crews who were attending the match were able to walk to the scene within minutes.

"The motorcyclist had suffered a minor leg injury and was taken away by an ambulance which arrived on scene soon after.

"The incident could have been much more difficult but wasn't thanks to the vigilance of those monitoring the CCTV."

The road was closed during rush hour to allow the emergency services to deal with the accident causing a backlog of traffic. It was reopened shortly after.
