The Internet was down for night owls and early birds with Time Warner Cable early Wednesday during a nationwide outage.

The outage happened during a routine network maintenance that went awry and knocked the Internet down for just about everyone coast to coast at 4:30 a.m., the New York-based company announced.

Time Warner Cable technicians are still investigating what went wrong, but believe the problem stemmed from an issue with their “Internet backbone” that “created disruption with our Internet and On Demand services,” according to a statement released by the company.

The problem shut down the company’s ability to send big data between regional and local networks, and affected about 80% of its residential customers.

By 6 a.m., the Internet was restored for most of its 11.4 million high-speed subscribers in 29 states.

However, some customers in the Northeast, Southern California and Texas reported no connection even by 10 a.m., according to a Downdetector.com outage map.
