The B4380 Buildwas Road at Leighton, between Atcham and Coalbrookdale, was expected to remain closed until noon.

Police were called to Leighton at around 6pm yesterday.

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said: "The road will remain closed until around midday while clear-up work takes place. No one was injured- they were just in shock."

Elsewhere yesterday high winds toppled trees and caused travel disruption as the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo swept across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

A fallen tree on the A488 in Knighton blocked the road at Woodhouse Lane, between Leintwardine and Llandrindod Wells, from about 7am yesterday.

In Telford a tree came down across a back garden in Heath Hill, Dawley.

High winds also forced staff to close Chirk Castle and the surrounding estate, near Wrexham.

Another fallen tree blocked the A442 at Pendlestone in Bridgnorth – and motorists also faced delays due to fallen power cables on Mucklestone Road in Loggerheads between Mucklestone Wood Lane and the A53 Market Drayton.

Two people died yesterday as strong winds battered Britain, including a woman was killed by a falling tree in Knightsbridge.

Some flights were cancelled at Heathrow but other airports reported no major problems.
