Business news for Wayne, Westland and Garden City

Camp Day at Tim Hortons

Enjoy a cup of coffee at the Tim Hortons restaurants in Wayne, Westland and Garden City in June and help make a difference in a child’s life.

The first Wednesday of June, Tim Hortons will host Camp Day, the largest annual fundraiser for the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation. Restaurant owners will donate 100 percent of coffee sales to the foundation, which provides programs and camps designed to change the way young people from economically disadvantaged homes think about themselves and the opportunities that exist for them.

In 2014, Camp Day raised more than $11.8 million, impacting more than 17,000 children who attended the foundation’s seven camps across Canada and the US.

Buddy’s helps MHS

Buddy’s Pizza has raised more than $10,000 for the Michigan Humane Society, from a product they call Buddy Bones, since embarking on the charitable initiative six months ago.

Unused portions of fresh dough left at the end of the day are transformed into all-natural bone-shaped treats safe for dogs. Each Buddy Bones package, which includes five 15-gram pieces, are $2, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Michigan Humane Society.

What began in November 2014 with a few Buddy’s Pizza employees, also pet owners, grew in popularity among the greater community, spanning all 11 locations in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties, including the one in Livonia.

Only natural ingredients go into Buddy Bones, and Michigan Humane Society veterinarians worked closely to make sure the products were safe and healthy for pets. Grains, water, yeast and molasses go into the healthy treats. Due to the all-natural ingredients Buddy Bones are best if consumed within 30 days of purchase.

“When Buddy's Pizza approached us with the idea of Buddy Bones a year ago, we knew it would be a hit — but $10,000 is amazing,” said Matthew Pepper, president and CEO of the Michigan Humane Society. “It’s clear that dogs love Buddy Bones, and the best part is that the proceeds will help other animals find loving homes.”
