Paddington station in London was closed off this afternoon as police investigated a "suspect vehicle".

Office workers in blocks around the station claimed they were told to stay inside after the security alert started at 12.20pm, while others were evacuated.

Ambulances, police vehicles and hazard response units could be seen behind cordons in the empty streets.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said officers made "routine investigations" before the alert was called off at 1.30pm.

Transport for London warned of traffic delays in the area as roads are being gradually reopened.
