Yatseniuk hopes for cut in price of EU gas after Paris talks

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk hopes for a cut in the price of gas imported from the European Union after talks which were held in Paris.

"We hope that volumes of gas purchases and the price of European gas will be more competitive than it is today," he said in parliament on Friday.

According to Yatseniuk, Ukraine currently buys natural gas from such large gas suppliers as RWE, Statoil, GDF Suez, E.ON, and Royal Dutch Shell.

At present, Ukraine buys gas from Russian gas giant Gazprom at around $250 per 1,000 cubic meter, Yatseniuk said, adding that this price is lower than that of gas acquired from Europe. However, Ukraine will continue to diversify its gas imports, the prime minister said.

Yatseniuk also called on international energy companies to help manage Ukraine's gas transportation system.

"Our dear European friends! We are not asking you to give us money. But we are saying to you: come here, invest in the Ukrainian gas transportation system and let's run this profitable Ukrainian-European business together. It will be the best response to Russian aggression," he said.
