National Grid Earns EEI's "Emergency Recovery Award" for Restoration Efforts After Ice Storm in 2013
Washington, DC (PRWEB) March 18, 2015
The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) today presented National Grid with the association's "Emergency Recovery Award" for its outstanding power restoration efforts after a severe ice storm in Northern New York in December 2013.
The award is presented annually to EEI member companies to recognize their extraordinary efforts to restore power to customers after service disruptions caused by severe weather conditions or natural events. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process, and the awards were presented during EEI's Spring CEO and Board of Directors meeting in Washington, D.C.
A major ice storm hit Watertown and portions of Northern New York on December 22, 2013 and interrupted service for approximately 81,430 customers in National Grid's Central New York division. National Grid mobilized crews several days ahead of the storm in order to be prepared to respond to any potential damage. More than 1,400 line workers and tree personnel from Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Canada quickly responded to restore power to customers. Two days after the storm, 93 percent of impacted customers had been restored.
"National Grid's exemplary effort to restore service demonstrates the industry's commitment to serving its customers," said EEI President Tom Kuhn. "We commend the crews who braved dangerous conditions in the wake of this severe winter storm, as they diligently worked to safely and quickly restore service."
"I am extremely proud of the efforts of our employees who worked tirelessly around the clock to restore power to our customers in Upstate New York," said Ken Daly, National Grid New York president. "The mobilization of our employees from across all National Grid service areas in Upstate New York, New England and Long Island/NYC demonstrates the value of teamwork and is a true testament to our commitment to serve our customers without borders."
