WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. said it will reach the 1,000 shop milestone Tuesday when it marks its return to the Kansas City metro market, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

The Kansas City, Kan., shop becomes the company’s fourth in the state counting one in Merriam, Overland Park and Wichita. The company had up to three shops in the Kansas City market as part of its initial push out of its core Southeast market in the mid-1990s.

As part of the celebration, Krispy Kreme will offer a free original glazed doughnut to the first 1,000 customers at all domestic and international shops, such as the two in its hometown of Winston-Salem.

“We are extremely proud of this latest accomplishment, and we are looking forward to sharing this joyful occasion with the millions of fans who enjoy our products in countries around the world,” Tony Thompson, the company’s chief executive and president, said in a statement.

Thompson said during a January presentation to analysts and investors that Krispy Kreme had about 700 international and 280 domestic shops. Every international shop is operated by a franchisee, along with 170 of the domestic shops.
