Statement of Need: Because obesity is a disease that frequently occurs as part of a constellation of conditions that increase a patient’s risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other metabolic conditions, a medical model should be applied to treatment. The initial step in this approach is to evaluate and stage each overweight or obese individual for the presence and severity of obesity-related complications, and the impact of these complications on overall health and well-being. Patients should be counseled on the potential health benefits of losing even a relatively small amount of weight, and educated on the complications and health risks that are remediable by weight loss.

In this activity, a 38-year-old obese female patient presents to her primary care clinician with a number of weight-related comorbidities. Risk-assessment strategies will be explored, as will setting individualized goals for weight reduction via behavioral changes. As many patients fail to attain or maintain a sufficient degree of weight loss with lifestyle changes alone, an overview of available, adjunctive pharmacologic therapies is also provided.

Target Audience: This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of primary care physicians, endocrinologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, dietitians, and other clinicians with an interest in obesity prevention and management.

Learning Objectives: After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Stratify overweight and obese patients according to cardiometabolic risks
  • Counsel obese patients on evidence-based strategies for weight loss and improvement of weight-related health risks
