Talented youngsters will fly the flag for south east London at the World Irish Dance Championships in Canada later this month.

Lia Finn, 10, and Ellie-Mae Wheeler, 13, Olivia Allen, 14, and siblings Conor and Mary-Kate Nealon, aged 11 and 12 respectively, will compete at the prestigious competition in Montreal.

All five train at the Claddagh Academy of Irish Dancing based in Greenwich and Essex.

Mottingham-born Lia qualified for the championships against the odds after practicing Irish dancing for just a year.

The St Vincent’s RC School pupil taught herself to dance using YouTube videos before her mum Veronica Finn, 34, decided to take her to dance classes.

Mrs Finn said: “I am so proud of Lia. I never expected it.

“It was a total shock to me as I didn’t think she would get to that level in such a short space of time.”

Lia’s younger sister 8-year-old Ruby Finn also trains as an Irish dancer and hopes to follow in her sister’s footsteps when she is older.
