One of Morris County's Macy's Stores to Shut Down This Spring

One of Morris County’s two Macy’s retail stores will be shut down in the spring of 2015, according to a company press release.

Under a new restructuring in the field, Macy’s will close 14 stores nationwide, including the Ledgewood location at the Ledgewood Mall. The store opened in 1994 and currently has 79 employees, the company said.

The Ledgewood Mall will still be anchored by Ashley Furniture and WalMart, but has seen longstanding box stores shutter in recent years, including Circuit City.

The company announced clearance sales began on Jan. 12 and will run for eight to 12 weeks. The Ledgewood location is the only New Jersey Macy’s set to close, and the Rockaway Townsquare Mall location will remain open.

Macy’s said the 14 stores it plans to close accounted for approximately $130 million in annual sales, but some of that is expected to be recouped by higher sales in nearby stores and online and mobile shopping.

The 79 employees being impacted by the closing will be offered positions in other stores where available, the company said. If there are no other positions, “Eligible full-time and part-time associates who are laid off due to the store closing will be offered severance benefits,” Macy’s said.

The company also said the closings, which came with the announcement that three new stores will be opening in other locations, will save the company some $140 million annually. With that money, the company said it will reinvest in technology and growth initiatives.

An official closing date for the Ledgewood store has not been announced.
