Vernon Bartling

1927 to 2015

Vernon Bartling, 88 of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, April 17, 2015 at the Regional West Garden County Nursing Home in Oshkosh.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wed., April 22, 2015 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Oshkosh with Brenda Tophoj, PMA officiating. Burial will follow in the Oshkosh City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Holechek funeral home in Oshkosh.

Memorials in Vern's name can be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church.

Vernon Richard Bartling was born Jan. 30, 1927 near Lodgepole, the oldest of the five children of Richard and Matilda (Scharrel) Bartling. He attended Goodview School and graduated from Lodgepole High School in 1944. He married Shirley Saunders on Sept. 29, 1946 and they made their home on farms north of Lodgepole until 1961 when they moved to Shirley's family ranch south of Oshkosh and then to Oshkosh in 1984.

Vernon was a farmer and rancher and in 1970 assumed the position of Garden County Weed Control Superintendent until his retirement in 2005. He served as State President of the Weed Control Association and was active in all of their functions. He attended college classes to further his knowledge of weed control. He was also active in the Nebraska Association of County Officials.

Vernon was a lifelong and faithful member of the Lutheran Church serving as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, usher, and board and committee member. He was a long time member of the Lions Club and assisted with many of their events. He served on the boards of the Garden County Draft, Garden County Cemetery District, and Mesa Vue. He enjoyed singing for many years in the Community Choir.

Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, his parents and brother, Lloyd (Bud) Bartling. Vernon is survived by children David (Shari), Barbara, and Michael (LaVonne) Bartling, grandchildren Brent, Jennifer, Christian, and Thomas Bartling and Sarah (Lucas) Staniec, great-grandchildren Brooke (Travis) Evenden, and Jacy Bartling, and great-great grandchildren Grayson, Levi, and Penelope Evenden, step-granddaughter Melissa Kinder and her sons Mitchell and Rolin, brothers Marvin (Ruth) Bartling, Gary (Maria) Bartling, sister Doris (Ray) Walker, sister-in-law Mary Lou Bartling and many nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbors.
